Penderyn Icons of Wales #8 – Hiraerth 70cl, 46%

The Welsh language is one of the oldest in Europe, and one of the most evocative Welsh phrases is ‘Hiraeth,’ which Penderyn celebrates with this Icon of Wales edition, number 8 in the series.

So, what exactly does the word ‘Hiraeth’ mean? It’s difficult to translate into English, thus meaning it has a mystical aspect. Some meanings include a sense of ‘belonging,’ ‘homesickness, “regret,’ ‘nostalgia,’ ‘wistfulness,’ or a ‘yearning for a home to which you cannot return,’ or even a ‘yearning for a home that may never have been.’ Another description is ‘a sense of loss for an old place,’ since Wales was a vibrant and prosperous country throughout the Middle Ages.

Penderyn is happy to be a Welsh firm and to be a part of a revival in Welsh manufacturing in a country that is growing more hope.

This whiskey has an ex-Bourbon barrel finish and is bottled at 46%abv. It is the first time Penderyn has issued a core range single malt that is primarily made from spirit from the pot stills, which were introduced in 2014.

Elegant and flowery on the nose, with mild oak notes, vanilla, raisins, toffee apples, citrus peel, and a hint of lime.

On the palate, it’s a delicate smooth single malt with honeyed fruits, vanilla, cinnamon spice, and a trace of nutmeg.

Notes of honey and vanilla fade to a malty finish.
