Puglia | Italy
Susumaniello is an ancient, native black grape from Puglia. Elegant and smooth red which is well balanced with a lingering finish of spices and red fruit. Delicious!
About the Producer
In its fifth generation, Saolo Leo is based in the Salento village of San Donaci. The estate began in the early 1900s when Antonio Leo vinified grapes from the “Masseria Monticello” vineyards. Now a modern winery with a 120,000hl capacity and a barrel room housing French and American oak barrels, it cultivates mainly indigenous grapes: Primitivo, Negroamaro, and Fiano across 80ha. Grapes are hand-harvested in boxes, destemmed, and fermented in steel at 27°C for 8–10 days with daily pumping over. Malolactic fermentation follows immediately, ensuring balanced wines.
Ageing
6 months in steel tank.
Food Pairing
Stewed meats and long-cooked ragù are embellished by the body of the wine. Excellent in the company of roast meat and game.
