Exeter Distillery was founded by publican and brewer Hamish Lothian in 2016, beginning life in an unlikely location — a former bedroom above The Fat Pig pub in Exeter. At the time, it was believed to be the UK’s smallest commercial distillery, producing tiny batches of spirits from scratch using a 100-litre still. The range included Bad Fagin’s Devon Gin, Exeter Vodka, Five Grain Whisky and Apple Pie Moonshine.
As the business grew, the stills moved to larger premises beneath St Thomas railway station, where Hamish continued experimenting with increasingly adventurous spirits, including his famously smooth Bad Fagin’s Gin, Ghost Gin, Militant Vodka and Absinthe Le Cochon Fée. The distillery became a wonderfully eccentric part of Exeter’s independent drinks scene before eventually closing.
