Vieux Château des Combes, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
Bordeaux | France
A sophisticated wine, with silky flavours of cassis and damson. Complexity is added by notes of baking spice, cedar and a touch of vanilla.
About the Producer
Septimius Cecchini, father of the current owner, arrived in Médoc from Italy during the 1940 exodus and became owner of Château La Hourcade, a nearly 40-are estate. He worked as both winemaker and postman while raising eight children. His son Gino took over in 1967, expanded the estate by buying nearby parcels up to 4 hectares in 1986, and balanced winemaking with service in the French cavalry. Today, the property covers 18 hectares of vines planted on gravel soils from the Garonne River. Until 1987, production was sold to a cooperative, but from 1988 Gino took control of distribution and focused on wine and horses.
